What You'll Learn

Our beginner firearms class covers everything a first-time gun buyer needs to know. By the end of the class, you will have a solid foundation in firearms safety and the confidence to handle your firearm responsibly. Here is what we cover:

• The Four Universal Firearm Safety Rules — These four rules are the foundation of everything we teach. You will learn them, understand them, and practice them until they become second nature. These rules have prevented more accidents than any piece of equipment ever made.
• How to Load and Unload Your Firearm — You will learn the correct procedure for loading and unloading both revolvers and semi-automatic pistols. We will show you how to check if a firearm is loaded, how to safely insert and remove a magazine, and how to clear a malfunction.
• Proper Grip and Stance — A good grip and a stable stance are the foundation of accurate shooting. You will learn multiple grip techniques and shooting stances so you can find what works best for your body and hand size.
• Sight Alignment and Sight Picture — You will learn how to use your firearm's sights to aim accurately. We cover both iron sights and an introduction to red dot optics so you understand the most common aiming systems on modern handguns.
• Trigger Discipline and Trigger Control — One of the most important skills in shooting is learning how to press the trigger smoothly without pulling the gun off target. You will practice dry-fire trigger control before ever firing a live round.
• Range Etiquette and Safety Protocols — Knowing how to behave safely at a shooting range is essential. You will learn range commands, hot and cold range procedures, what to do in an emergency, and general etiquette so you are comfortable and safe at any range you visit.

What to Expect at Your First Class

Walking into a firearms class for the first time can feel intimidating. We get it. Here is a step-by-step walkthrough of exactly what your first class at USS Academy looks like, so there are no surprises:

Step 1: Check In

You will arrive at the class location and check in with our team. We will verify your registration, collect any required forms, and give you a quick overview of the day. You will meet your instructor and your fellow students. Most classes have a mix of experience levels, and you will find that many of the people in the room are first-timers just like you.

Step 2: Classroom Session

The class begins with a classroom session where your instructor will cover firearm safety rules, basic terminology, how firearms work mechanically, and an overview of Florida gun laws. This is an interactive session — questions are encouraged. Our instructors want to make sure you understand the material, not just memorize it. There are no stupid questions in a USS Academy classroom. If you are confused about something, ask. That is what we are here for.

Step 3: Hands-On Practice with Dummy Rounds

Before you fire a single live round, you will get hands-on practice with unloaded firearms and dummy rounds (also called snap caps). This is where you practice your grip, stance, sight alignment, trigger control, loading, and unloading in a completely safe environment. Your instructor will work with you individually during this phase to correct any bad habits and make sure your technique is solid before moving to the range.

Step 4: Live-Fire on the Range

When you and your instructor are both confident that you are ready, you will move to the shooting range for live-fire practice. Your instructor will be right next to you on the firing line, providing guidance, corrections, and encouragement with every shot. You will fire at a target at a comfortable distance, focusing on safety and basic accuracy. This is not a competition or a test — it is a learning experience. Most students are surprised at how quickly they improve and how much fun shooting actually is.

Step 5: Q&A with Your Instructor

After the range session, your instructor will open the floor for questions. This is your chance to ask about anything — what gun to buy, where to practice, how to get your concealed carry permit, what holster to use, how to talk to your family about gun safety in the home, or anything else on your mind. Our instructors genuinely enjoy helping new shooters and will take as much time as you need.

What to Bring

• Closed-Toe Shoes — Required for the range. No sandals, flip-flops, or open-toe shoes. Spent brass casings are hot and can land on your feet.
• Eye and Ear Protection — USS Academy provides eye and ear protection if you do not have your own. If you wear prescription glasses, those work as eye protection.
• Valid Government-Issued ID — Bring your driver's license or state ID.
• Comfortable Clothing — Wear something you can move in comfortably. Avoid low-cut tops, as hot brass can fall into open necklines. A crew neck t-shirt and jeans or athletic wear is perfect.
• A Positive Attitude — That is all you need. We take care of the rest.

You will not be the only beginner in the class. A large percentage of USS Academy students are taking their very first firearms class. There Are No Stupid Questions

We mean this sincerely. If you do not know what a magazine is, ask. If you do not know the difference between a revolver and a semi-automatic, ask. If you are not sure which hand to hold the gun with, ask. Every question you have is a question that dozens of students before you have also had. Our instructors would rather you ask than guess, because guessing with a firearm is never the right approach.

Is a gun class safe for someone who has never touched a firearm?

Absolutely. Safety is our number one priority and it is the first thing we teach. You will receive thorough safety instruction before ever handling a firearm, and our instructors are with you every step of the way on the range. What age do I need to be to take a gun class in Florida?

In Florida, you must be at least 21 years old to apply for a Concealed Weapons Permit. However, students 18 and older can take our beginner firearms safety class. Minors may attend certain classes with a parent or legal guardian present. Call us at 407-305-8335 for specific age requirements.

Do I need to own a gun to take a class?

No. USS Academy provides all firearms, ammunition, eye protection, and ear protection needed for the class. Many students take the class before purchasing their first firearm so they can learn proper technique first. If you do own a firearm, you are welcome to bring it.

How long is the beginner firearms class?

The beginner class typically runs 2 to 3 hours, including classroom instruction, hands-on practice, and supervised live-fire on the range. We never rush — the class takes as long as it needs to make sure every student is comfortable.

What if I am nervous about shooting for the first time?

That is completely normal. The majority of our beginner students are nervous before their first class. Our instructors are trained to work with nervous students patiently and supportively. We start with classroom instruction, then dry practice with unloaded firearms, and only go to the range when you feel ready. You will never be pressured or rushed.
