How to Get Started in Competitive Shooting
Competitive shooting is one of the fastest-growing shooting sports in the United States. USS Academy provides a clear pathway from your first match to sanctioned competition.
Understanding the Divisions
USPSA (United States Practical Shooting Association) — The premier action shooting sport in America. Competitors engage paper and steel targets from different shooting positions while moving through multi-stage courses of fire. Divisions include Production, Carry Optics, Limited, Open, and Single Stack. Scoring combines accuracy with speed, rewarding shooters who can deliver precise hits under time pressure. USS Academy trains competitors for all USPSA divisions with a focus on stage planning, transition speed, and consistent draw-to-first-shot times.
IDPA (International Defensive Pistol Association) — Designed to simulate real-world self-defense scenarios using practical equipment. Competitors shoot from behind barricades, engage moving targets, and reload behind cover. Divisions include Stock Service Pistol (SSP), Enhanced Service Pistol (ESP), Compact Carry Pistol (CCP), Custom Defensive Pistol (CDP), and Back Up Gun (BUG). IDPA emphasizes defensive accuracy and realistic concealment-based shooting. Our training programs build the tactical decision-making and cover utilization skills that separate competitive IDPA shooters from recreational participants.
Steel Challenge — A pure speed shooting sport where competitors engage steel plates in predetermined arrays. Five shots, five plates, fastest time wins. Eight standardized stages test different shooting skills from close-range speed to transitions across wide arrays. Steel Challenge is the ideal entry point for new competitors because the rules are simple, the equipment requirements are minimal, and the feedback is immediate — you either hear the ring of steel or you do not. USS Academy recommends Steel Challenge as the first competition experience for most students.
Equipment You Need
Competitive shooting does not require specialized race guns to get started. Most new competitors begin with the same firearm they use for concealed carry or home defense. Here is what you need for your first match:

Competitive Shooting FAQ
Common questions from students interested in competitive shooting through USS Academy.
What competitive shooting divisions does USS Academy train for?
USS Academy trains for USPSA (all divisions including Production, Carry Optics, Limited, and Open), IDPA (SSP, ESP, CCP, CDP, and BUG divisions), Steel Challenge (rimfire and centerfire), and multi-gun tactical matches. We offer both local club match preparation and sanctioned competition track programs for serious competitors.
Do I need my own firearm to compete?
Yes. Competitors must bring their own firearm, holster, magazines, and ammunition to all matches and training sessions. USS Academy can provide guidance on equipment selection for your specific division. For students who do not yet own a competition-appropriate setup, our Try Before You Buy course allows you to test different platforms before purchasing.
What skill level do I need to start competing?
All skill levels are welcome at local club matches. Most clubs have new shooter orientations before your first match. We recommend completing at least our Tier 1 CWP course and ideally our Tier 2 Skill Building program before your first competition. Our instructors can assess your readiness during any training session and recommend when you are prepared for match conditions.
How much does competitive shooting training cost?
Skill Building sessions (Tier 2) start at $279 per session. Competition-specific coaching is available through our advanced training programs and USS Elite team practice sessions. Match entry fees at local clubs typically range from $15 to $35 per match. Contact USS Academy at 407-305-8335 for current competition training availability and pricing.
How do I join the USS Elite Competitive Team?
The USS Elite team accepts members by invitation or application. Candidates should have completed Tier 2 training or equivalent experience, demonstrated safe gun handling under match conditions, and shown commitment to regular practice. Team members receive official USS Academy gear, dedicated coaching, match coordination, and performance tracking. Apply through our website or call 407-305-8335 to discuss eligibility.
Where are competitive shooting matches held in Florida?
Florida has an active competitive shooting community with matches held at clubs and ranges across the state. Central Florida venues include Central Florida Rifle and Pistol Club in Orlando, Volusia County Gun and Hunt Club near Daytona, and Palm Bay Rifle and Pistol Club on the Space Coast. USS Academy maintains relationships with match directors across the Southeast and can help connect you with your nearest competition venue.
