Self Defense Training Built on Florida Law

Self-defense is one of the most misunderstood areas of Florida law. Television dramatizes it. Internet opinions distort it. And in the moment it matters, most people have never actually been taught what the state protects, what it does not, and what the decision-making looks like before you ever touch a weapon. USS Academy's Self-Defense Class in Orlando is built to fix that. Every class is taught by certified instructors with operational experience in law enforcement, military service, and civilian firearm instruction — the same instructors who train our 29,000+ concealed carry students.

The class covers Florida Statute 776 (justifiable use of force), Florida Statute 790 (firearms law), stand-your-ground, castle doctrine, duty to retreat, reasonable force, deadly force, threat assessment, de-escalation, and the practical decision-making that determines whether a situation ends safely or in a courtroom. It is a classroom-based seminar, not a range course, although it pairs naturally with our live-fire programs.

What the Self Defense Class Covers

The curriculum moves from Florida's legal framework through scenario-based decision-making, with time reserved at the end for student questions.

Florida Statute 776

Justifiable use of force, reasonable force, deadly force, standards of belief, the specific language Florida courts look for.

Statute 790 Overview

Firearms-specific statutes that overlap with self-defense decisions, including carry zones and prohibited places.

Stand Your Ground

What Florida's stand-your-ground provision actually says, when it applies, when it does not, and how prosecutors and juries read it.

Castle Doctrine

The home defense framework, the presumption of reasonable fear, and the practical application at the doorway and in the driveway.

Threat Assessment

Recognizing intent vs capability vs opportunity, reading pre-assault indicators, and the decision points that come before a response.

De-escalation & Post-Event

Verbal de-escalation, disengagement, post-event actions, 911 call language, and the first hours after a self-defense event.

Adults Who Want to Understand the Framework

The Self-Defense Class is designed for any adult who wants to understand what self-defense actually means under Florida law — not what television or the internet suggests it means. Students include concealed carry permit holders who want a deeper legal grounding than the CWP class allows, parents teaching adult children about home defense, professionals who work in environments with occasional risk, seniors evaluating their own safety posture, and first-time students who have never owned a firearm but want to understand the legal and decision-making framework before they consider one.

The class is not a firearms class. No range work. No live-fire. Students leave with a classroom-grounded understanding of Florida self-defense law and the practical thinking that applies long before the physical moment arrives.

Self Defense Taught by People Who Know

Every USS Academy class is built around the principle that training should come from people with real credentials and real experience. The Self-Defense Class is no exception.
