For Veterans, By Instructors Who Served
Your service gave you real handling skill, real time under pressure, and real respect for what a firearm is and what it can do. USS Academy's veterans-focused firearms training is built around that reality. We do not teach you what you already know. We help you meet Florida's specific civilian concealed weapons license requirement, sharpen skills that transfer imperfectly to civilian carry, and continue the professional development many veterans pursue after their service.
Over 27 years, USS Academy has trained thousands of veterans moving into civilian life, and many of those students have gone on to teach on our roster. Our instructor team includes United States Marine Corps veterans, active and retired law enforcement officers, and credentialed firearms instructors. Your instructor understands where you are coming from.
Florida's Civilian CWL Requirement
Your military service gave you more firearm handling experience than most civilians will ever have. But Florida's Concealed Weapons License (CWL) requirement is specific: it requires a certified civilian training course that includes live-fire qualification under Florida Statute 790.06(2)(h). Military service, law enforcement service, and hunter-safety certifications do not automatically satisfy this requirement.
USS Academy's civilian CWP class is designed so veterans complete the state requirement efficiently, cleanly, and with a same-day state-approved certificate in hand for the FDACS application. We do not make you sit through material you already understand — but we do cover what the state requires us to cover, including Florida-specific law (Statute 776, stand your ground, castle doctrine) and civilian-context decision-making that differs from military rules of engagement.
Programs Veterans Enroll In Most
Veterans enroll across our full curriculum, but four programs are most common.

Advanced Skill Development
Tier 2 for veterans who want civilian-context defensive shooting and dynamic movement refinement.
Tactical Training
Tier 3 scenario and advanced-firearm training that complements military experience in civilian contexts.
Tier 6 Professional Development
For veterans pursuing NRA, USCCA, and Florida Class K instructor certifications. See NRA Firearms Instructor.
Host a Class
Private sessions for veteran organizations, military installations, or VFW/American Legion posts.
Women Veterans
Women-led sessions available. See Women's Concealed Carry.
Instruction That Respects Your Service
Veterans in our classes are treated with the respect their service earned. Instructors do not repeat basics that every veteran already knows. Classroom time is efficient. Range time focuses on the specific skill differences between military handling and civilian concealed carry — which are real, and which matter legally and practically.
Many classes mix veterans with active and retired law enforcement officers, and the conversation in these classes tends to be richer than any other. Veterans learn from cops. Cops learn from veterans. First-time civilian shooters learn from both. It is the kind of environment only a training program with 27 years and 29,000+ students can create.
